December 2015: Carol singing
Rather than inflicting our voices on the people of Harrogate, we decided to keep our carol singing in the confines of St George’s Social Club.
We were lucky to have the assistance of professional choir leader Rhiannon Gayle, who bravely faced 80 novice singers and managed to bring us together as a choir within just a couple of hours. Who would have thought that was possible?!
After a fun and effective warm-up, Rhiannon took us through a few familiar Christmas songs – all with a bit of a twist. We learned a new tune for Away in a Manger and some unusual accompaniments for Ding Dong Merrily on High. We were even able to pull off some impressive harmonies – not bad for our first two hours as a choir!
Rhiannon created a fun and festive atmosphere that encouraged everyone to have a go at singing, even if the last time they tried it was at primary school. An advocate of singing for good physical and mental health, she certainly proved that being in a choir can lift the soul and give a sense of joy, no matter what else may be going on.
Anyone interested in pursuing their new-found talent for singing can try a taster session with one of Rhiannon’s choirs, Rock Up and Sing!, in Harrogate. The next sessions are during the week of 11th January and places can be booked by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01423 508500.
