Our final meeting of 2013 was suitably festive – we made table centres for our Christmas meals.
The session was led by three fantastic ladies from Goldsborough WI. While Lynn explained the basics of attaching the oasis to the plate and then securing the candles, helpers Maureen and Mildred got to work on their own creations. By the time Lynn had shown us how to layer up a handful of cuttings to begin creating a display, either side of her were two very impressive-looking Christmas table centres, complete with ribbons, baubles and more.
There’s only so much tuition you can have before you just have to take the plunge and have a go yourself, so we headed back to our own tables to make a start. The Sweethearts who were with us two years ago to make festive wreaths for the door or table had a bit of an advantage, having learnt how to deal with difficult oasis and spiky stems, so made swift progress. Other less experienced members took a while to get the hang of it, but with Lynn, Maureen and Mildred on hand, it wasn’t long before their centres were building up nicely.
As in November, it was a great chance to chat and catch up with people while we worked and, by the end of the evening, everyone had an impressive creation to take home. They were all very different from each other and each had its own style, as these examples show:
Lucy Cooper
Sarah Bailes
Holly Jones
Sarah Wright
We’re hugely grateful to Lynn, Maureen and Mildred for their help – it was a very relaxed, enjoyable evening delivered with a lot of humour. We’ll certainly be calling them again when we want to learn more about floristry!
A very merry Christmas to all Spa Sweethearts and their friends and family. We look forward to seeing you in 2014!
